THE DEVIL IN TRIPLICATE

Today’s the benighted day: the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year, when the devil becomes a daddy.

Oddly enough, a rash has broken out on my left hand: and the eruption has formed itself to a mark…THE DREADED MARK! Of course, when I show it to someone else, they see the numbers 999…but I know better.

Hmmm…I’m feeling knobs growing on either side of my forehead, and either they’re horns, or a brain tumor gone terribly awry.

Curiosity has touched my fragile mental state, and so I wonder: what happened on the momentous day, on June 6th, 666 CE? My guess is: probably nothing, other than some fanatics going a little apeshit.

Over the years, I’d always dreaded the MARK. I’d even silently sworn never to deny ole JC, and when I applied for welfare over two years ago (and failed miserably: I’m a middle-aged white male without kids, and not suffering from dementia, so tough stuff baby), they took a picture of my eye, and was I convinced I was marked (yes, this was pre-atheist days).

And we’ve all heard the wild postulations. The Social security number is the mark, the upcoming Identity cards are the mark, hell, I’m sure some wackinoid has come up with the theory that the GPS chips in our automobiles are the dreaded mark (which of course, means only non-drivers will be Raptured, hallelujah!).

We’ve all probably heard the wild ideas the religious have: Clinton was the Antichrist, Bush is, hell, someone might even think Prez Garfield was (that’d be a preterist, of course).

I recall lo these many years ago; someone brought home a printout from the Inglesia ni Christos (the church that kicked out my ex, and took her back after her husband committed suicide, another long story), that claimed the Pope was, via the subjective numerology derived from the writing on his hat. I wish I were joking.

When the fact of the matter is, that the mad ramblings of Revelation were targeting Nero (aka Neron) and the Roman Empire of that day.

Anyways, it’s just a number.

To top it off, a quote from one of our best presidents:

It is between fifty and sixty years since I read the Apocalypse, and I then considered it merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy, nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams.... what has no meaning admits no explanation.-- Thomas Jefferson, to Alexander Smyth, January 17, 1825

The welfare folks took a picture of your eye?
They looked into the window of your soul (OOPS there's THAT word!) and saw you were not welfare-worthy?
Whoa. Will welfare recipients soon have to nose up to an eye ID reader to collect their checks? Maybe the ID readers will be built into the new plasma screen TVs, so that folks don't have to leave the comfort of their homes to get their cha-ching.
Interesting.

And why the number 666, anyway? have you looked into it? Why not 444, or 888? Granted, 888 is too reminiscent of infinity cubed. But why overlook 444? I'm sure 444 tries its best to be as evil as the next triple digit.

Aside from that, my life seems to be the same, so I gather I have been "left behind". PHEW! Close one, I bet.

That I wasn't spawned in the U.S.
Actually, nah... I don't.
'Cause I don't believe in that monstrous psychotic phantasy.
(God, I mean...).
Yet, I -do- consider myself lucky
that I'm not an American.
Being born Iranian or North Korean would be much worse, granted...
But we'd be talking, if not downright decimal-points, then... well... close enough.

I feel lucky having grown up in the country I have... yet I detest a lot about Denmark as well... maybe more.
Because I know the Danish swine intimately, I can abhor them all the more.
What's that saying?
A prophet is always a traitor in his home country?

Nah. ;) They looked at my paperwork.

Ain't biometrics a wunnerful thing?

Yet more reasons not to rub shoulders w/their fellow human beings. Talk about disconnect.
And why the number 666, anyway?
Multiple of 3, is my guess. Three's are everywhere.
Now 999 is supposed to be YHVH's #. 777 is JC's.
Aside from that, my life seems to be the same, so I gather I have been "left behind".
Well, in accordance w/the folly of the rapturees, 1st comes the apostasy, then tribulations. Some'll be cherry-picked then. But THEN comes the rapture.

Reluctant,

Interesting read...

Were you a christian at this time last year? Had you been all your life?

I thought you just had considered it.

I dont agree with this theory at all. These are, to me, just theories from male bias scholars who refuse to look into the origins of the number 666. In ancient times six was the sexual number of mankind. Man was created on the sixth day and Aphrodites sacred sexual number was 6 in her trinity 666. The book of revelations calles her the whore of babylon and the baptist call her the virgin Mary. That is why they believe the pope and the catholic church are the anichrist and they are right to believe so cuz that is what the book of revelations says. It says she will lead gods men astray and into worshipping her and to worship her is to worship womens sexuality that is why the book of revelations say only 44000 men who did NOT defile themselves with women will go to heaven.

I cut and pasted this from the skeptics anointed bible about the book of revelations.
----------
Jezebel (whom God had thrown off a wall, trampled by horses, and eaten by dogs [2 Kg.9:33-37]) is further reviled by John, saying "that woman Jezebel" taught and seduced God's "servants to commit fornication." 2:20
---------
Jesus will "cast her [Jezebel] into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her." 2:22
--------
Only 144,000 celibate men will be saved. (Those who were not "defiled with women.") 14:1-4
--------
Drinking the wine of her fornication. 14:8
--------
The great whore has "committed fornication" with all the kings on earth. Everyone else is "drunk with the wine of her fornication." She sits on a scarlet colored beast with the usual 7 heads and 10 horns. She carries a cup full of the "filthiness of her abominations" and has a big sign on her forehead saying: "Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth." You'll know her when you see her. 17:1-5
----------
"And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs." 17:6
--------
"All nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her." 18:3
---------
The "great whore" corrupted the earth with her fornication. 19:2

Wow. It was actually TWO years ago. How the time passes. How's that song go? "Sunrise, sunset. Swiftly fly the years."
Thanks for the catch. I'll have to fix that pronto.
As to your other query:
I was a semi-theist hedging my bets so to speak. That's the short version.

You sound more like Marx. Your atheism has earned you an exclusive invitation to the newest WCSN post. We'll see you there. Well done!

That's interesting. Got link?
The 6th day - you're right about the creation thingie. The rest I hadn't heard before.
I pulled the 7, 3, 6, 9 #'s from memories from my days as a kabbalistic dilletante.

Here is a link about aphrodite and the number 666.
http://www.brynmawr.edu/alumnae/bulletin/rside.htm

I agree with this cuz the only gods the monotheistic god couldnt completely do away with was the goddess. She remained till the very end and some would argue that god never got rid of her at all cuz she is still here, but we know her as the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdaline. I cant remember off hand where it is in the NT, but at some point Jesus and his followers destroyed the temple of Diana the same goddess just different name.

Well, that link was just a brief blurb.
You should read 'Son of Man' by Andrew Harvey.
It's a religious book, but I think you may enjoy it.

Sorry about the link, I didnt have time to search the net for more detailed information on Aphrodite and the number 666, but if you do a google search on Aphrodite's sacred number you'll find that 666 comes up over and over again. There is a new band out there called Aphrodite's child 666 and it has taken up a lot of space on the web now, when I tried to do a search there were a lot of sites on them. SO, you might have to go through a few pages before you can really find the good stuff, but I will try now since I have a few minutes this morning. Give me a few.

This link looks very interesting. I havent read through all of it yet, but what I did read is interesting and makes a lot more sense than the Nero theory that doesnt take into consideration the signifagance of numbers and sexuality in ancient times.

http://www.brynmawr.edu/alumnae/bulletin/rside.htm

Oh man, this site is very interesting and the books I have been reading talk a lot about the Essenic christians and appearently somewhere in their writings the goddess is associated with the number 666. I havent found it yet, but on my google search is says this...."However, it may surprise many to discover that a goddess was associated with ... The literal interpretation is that the number 666 will be imprinted on the ..."

I could be reading too much into it though. link below

http://www.thenazareneway.com/

Here is another link I dont have time to read all the way through, but it got real interesting about half way down. A little different theory.

http://www.equilibra.uk.com/shop2.shtml

Robert Graves book the 'White Goddess' I havent read but do know in his studies of paganism he also came to the conclusion that the number of the beast was Aprodite's.

Barbra Walker also agrees and does a good job expaining it in her books 'Symbols of the Goddess' and "The Women's Encyclapedia'.

There are still lots of theories out there about the number 666, but in some areas in Asia it is still called the goddess's lucky number and the goddess is prayed to to bring good luck. I'm not saying there is only one right theory, but There is a definate connection between the number and the goddess of the ancient.

http://www.thenazareneway.com/? I've looked into those folks. They're erecting an Essenic commune in Oregon (all those folks gravitate there, must be the magnetic flux or sumptin'). They believe in reincarnation, Essenism, a cornucopia of Judaic, xtian, & New Age/Eastern mysticism.
They seem serene enough, but we'll see if we're reading about them in the newspapers in the next decade or so.

I thought they sounded too gun ho on their beliefs and that usually leads to trouble. Only time will tell. I think the most interesting thing about this group of followers is that it is VERY VERY buddhist/hindhuist like and makes me want to read that book 'The Suns of God' by Acharya S
even more Cuz she covers the origins of Krishna, Buddha and Jesus and shows how they are all connected.
